Google Drive for Android adds “notifications” feed

Google introduces a “new way to view and manage notifications” associated with your Drive files. The hope is that with this new notification stream, users will spend less time switching between Google Drive for Android and an email app.

From the bottom page or Priority (available to Workspace users) users will be able to switch between ‘Suggested’ and the new ‘Notifications’ Center:

  • See all your notifications in one place, even without device notifications enabled
  • Choose filters to control the types of notifications you receive
  • Delete notifications that you do not want and delete them
  • Take actions such as sharing files directly from notifications
  • Show more file information directly from the notification

The Google Drive notification stream is designed to show you key alerts and tasks. This is more prominent than the previous option – as seen above – in the navigation loading. There is a high level filter, while each item provides actions for faster resolutions. It is meant to save time compared to the existing email dependent workflow of people:

Today, many people rely on email to keep track of important activities on their files in Google Workspace. Sometimes this may include searching your inbox, setting up filters or addressing unrelated and urgent emails

Google notices how the new tab will be available, even if users do not opt for app notifications. It is available for both a personal and a corporate account with version 2021.8 of Drive for Android installed, although it has not yet been widely released.
