Google Discover YouTube on ‘Short Videos’ Carousel

Back in August, Google Discover started compiling ‘short videos’ to join web pages, regular videos, and later AMP-based web stories. Before the beta hits the US next month, Google is testing YouTube YouTube Shorts and other short-lived content in Discover.

Cards contain the YouTube play logo in the top left corner, while the video title and ‘YouTube’ appear below. By tapping, the YouTube app and a new full-screen player open instantly where you can like / dislike, view comments, share and see ‘More’ – Send description, report or feedback. There is no search bar, with the only control playing / breaking. You can swipe up to jump to a new Short and down to go back.

When we first saw the “Short Videos” carousel in Discover last year, it featured excerpts from Indian TikTok rival Trell and Google Area 120 project Tangi, which focuses on 60-second self-paced “quick videos”.

Back in Discover, you have the option to “Do not show it again” from the overflow menu, while this carousel is displayed along with the AMP “Stories”.

The carousel displays ten videos while the content appears here. “YouTube shorts” are up to 15 seconds long and are made using a “short camera” that is currently only available in India. With the new “short-form video creation tool” you can select music, adjust speed and set a hands-free countdown timer during recording.

However, YouTube encourages all creators to upload short vertical videos lasting up to 60 seconds, and marked with #Shorts in the title or description. These videos are also shown in the special player UI described above, various carousels in the YouTube app and – now – Discover.

Google Discover today includes regular YouTube content as full maps, and today’s addition of Shorts is a natural extension that will help strengthen the beta format. The Google company announced that the Shorts camera and beta are coming out of the country, and “the YouTube Shorts player now receives more than 3.5 billion daily views worldwide.”

Google Discover’s short video carousel with YouTube is still being tested and not yet widely released.
