Google Chrome update cycles get even shorter

Google is moving Chrome to a more regular release schedule. The company will post future milestone releases that add new features every four weeks. These updates currently take place every six weeks. Google has said that you can thank the improvements to the testing and release processes for the new schedule. The move aligns Chrome with Firefox, which has had a monthly update cadence since the beginning of last year.

To accommodate customers for businesses that may not want to see changes as often, Google is also adding an “Extended Stable” option that allows users to receive feature updates every eight weeks. The company will continue to forward security slots to those who opt in twice a week in the schedule, but it does not include new features. Google plans to switch to the four-week cycle starting with Chrome 94 in the third quarter of 2021.
