With New Year’s Day around the corner, Google Assistant can now sing a funny song that will give your phone, Chromebook or Nest Hub some fun. It features a dancing New Year’s ball like the one that drops when the clock strikes midnight and 2021. To try it out for yourself, just say ‘Hey Google, sing the New Year’s song.’ Here are the lyrics if you would like to sing along.
Sing a song for the new year
I hope we all thriveKindness, love and laughter
May this be our guideI’m here to look after
All your search needsJust say the magic words
And I’m here to pleaseSay ‘Okay, Google, sing the New Year’s song.’
If you just click below the suggestion that says “What is the magic word”, Google will reply and say “The magic word is” please “. You can also ask the assistant what the New Year’s intention is. I love how Google is run by a bunch of geeks and goofs, and even in the midst of current issues, employees can continue to create fun and engaging experiences that offer a little joy. With that said, I definitely think this one, although cute, is a bit cheesy and I think they dropped the ball a little early. Either way, I can not exactly sketch something that is meant to give off a light in such a dark year as too bad, so it’s a welcome addition to the Assistant function.
Just so you know, the tradition of dropping the ball in Time’s Square began in 1904, but it continued until 1833, when a ‘time ball’ was installed on top of England’s Royal Observatory in Greenwich. When dropped at one o’clock every afternoon, it would be a sign for nearby ships to set their chronometers accurately – how cool is that? About 150 timeballs were installed around the world, but after they stopped working and were abandoned as a means of naval navigation, in favor of more modern methods, it became known in New York rather as a festive thing (oh, and it was fastened with an absurd amount of lights and lasers too). Happy New Year!
