Google App for Browser Bottom Browser Android Testing

Last year, the Google app on Android Chrome exposed Custom Tabs when Discover articles and search results were opened. Google has now redesigned the custom browser in the app with a bottom bar to make it easier to navigate.

Updated 2/9: This browser redesign in the app gets an important feature that allows users to swipe on the bottom bar with a new drag tab. These slides open a “People view” page that contains the Google logo at the top, and shows a feed of articles and videos related to the Discover or Search link you opened. Some content contains full-width tickets, while there are also carousels.

It provides a Discover-esque experience and is a seamless way to see more about a topic while staying in your current browser window. In general, features like these are why Google has opted for a personalized browsing experience for its Search app. It starts with the Google app 12.4 beta.

Original 1/14: While the old design was placed at the top right of the app bar, this redesign moves key actions down. There is now the ability to navigate back and forth while ‘Share’ opens the default Android page. The right-hand button opens a menu with the same options as before: refresh, open in Chrome, find on page, browser settings and send feedback.

The application bar still has a button in the left corner, while the HTTPS lock and domain are centered and Google’s bookmarking feature is on the right. Meanwhile, both strips hide while browsing for a clean look.

Google Browser Redesign

Google shows no sign that it would return to the previous Chrome Custom Tab implementation that was a universal Android paradigm. This browser approach in the app has its own website settings and the ability to clear browser data as well as enable / disable Safe Browsing. The only alternative is to open all Discover content and search results directly in Chrome.

This custom browser redesign starts with the latest Google app beta (version 11.43).
