Of course, scoring more at the end of the game is important. But in both playoff losses over the past two years, the Seahawks struggled early on before the offense got underway late. And they may want to reverse the trend before entering the post-season.
The 2021 draft sowing scenarios for 49ers in the final season
With a loss
This is the only sensible or probable way for the 49ers to move up in the draft. At 6-9, they are currently 15th in the draft order.
The most important break-even point between teams with the same record is the strength of the schedule. The 49ers (.544 strength of schedule) lose the most tiebreakers. There are possibly six, but probably five places San Francisco can get.
- If the Carolina Panthers (5-10, .529 SOS) beat the New Orleans Saints (11-4), there is a outside chance that the 49ers can get a place. That would require the Panthers ‘strength of the schedule to jump significantly and that the 49ers’ would drop. A loss of Saints will drop the power of both teams. This is a very unlikely scenario, but it would mean +1 place.
- If the Denver Broncos (5-10, .567 SOS) beat the Oakland Raiders (7-8, .542 SOS), would get the 49ers +1 place.
- If the Dallas Cowboys (6-9, .465 SOS) beats the New York Giants (5-10) and Washington (6-9, .465 SOS) beat the Philadelphia Eagles (4-10-1), the 49ers would win +1 place. Washington is currently in a playoff game, but if they lose and Dallas wins, they will fall back from the playoffs and pick in a high draft, which makes it a wash. Nothing changes if Dallas loses.
- If the Los Angeles Chargers (6-9, .490 SOS) beats the Kansas City Chiefs (14-1), which rests many of their starters, including Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill, and which the Chargers took overtime earlier this season, would win the 49ers +1 place.
- If the Minnesota Vikings (6-9, .508 SOS) beats the Detroit Lions (5-10, .504 SOS), the 49ers win +1 place.

It’s all of them. Currently, in 15th place, there are about five likely scenarios for the 49ers to rush the draft order, possibly to 10th place. Ninth is technically possible, but highly unlikely.
