Golden Nuggets: Rapoport says Shanahan and Lynch only told a few people the quarterback targeting the 49ers

The Athletic’s Matt Barrows had an informative interview below in which John Beck – who is currently training Justin Fields and Trey Lance – talks about daily calls between Kyle Shanahan and his former QB quarterback guru.

49ers is close to Justin Fields’ QB coach, who now also works with Trey Lance – Wheelbarrows

“Because he knows I’ve been to Fields for the past three months, he’s going to reach out and just ask questions or talk,” Beck said in a telephone interview Tuesday at his Huntington Beach facility. And kind of: What are the things we’re working on, the things I think played into his system and were coached by him, I know how he’s going to coach quarterbacks? I know what he’s looking for. So I think this is an easy extension of Kyle in terms of the eyes I have for quarterbacks. ”

It’s in the line of: ‘Hey, I know when he did some of this throwing, it was some side of the (play) action. Can you show me the actions to others? Said Beck. “These are simple things. That way, Kyle can get a balanced look. ”

Kawakami: Why I guess Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers will work their way to Justin Fields in the NFL draft

OK, yeah, about Garoppolo. Many of the NFL people I talk to assume that Garoppolo may not really be the 49ers’ planned starter in 2021. They believe this is the real smokescreen, that Shanahan and Lynch could not be comfortable giving back the starting spot and paying out $ 24.1 million to someone who gave them their first three rounds to replace.

When the 49ers finish Garoppolo, they need the number one choice to start Week 1 of this season. This is another direct connection with Jones, who is widely considered more NFL-ready than Fields of Lance (or presumably Zach Wilson of BYU, who is expected to go No. 2 to the Jets). I’m not entirely sure Jones’ transition will be as seamless as many people assume, as he was just a freshman from Alabama and QBs who started the Crimson Tide before him for several years – Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa – did not exactly take over the NFL as rookies. But I understand the thinking. If the 49ers immediately need a new appetizer, it will pick Jones above all others likely to be available at 3.

NFC West Notes: 49ers, Wright, Conner

  • With Trevor Lawrence almost certainly bound to Jacksonville and Zach Wilson on course to join the Jets, the 49ers ’QB preference emerged as perhaps the best discussion point of the draft. Few in the team’s building know which passer Shanahan prefers. He and John Lynch said only a few people the quarterback they were targeting, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com said during an appearance on the Rich Iron Podcast (video link). That would amount to Fields, Lance and Jones. So far, Jones may have a slight advantage. While Shanahan and Lynch have shown rare transparency after their trade up to number 3, their secrecy in the building will still create interest in what QB Shanahan wants. Lynch and Shanahan, who prefer to attend Jones’ pro-day over Fields, may have served earlier, but the 49ers attend Fields and Lance’s second appearances.

Why is Adam Schefter responding to ESPN about whether the 49ers are a lock to picking Mac Jones at number 3?

“Oh, it’s going to be Mac Jones,” Schefter said without a doubt during an ESPN radio appearance on April 6. He added a small, extremely qualifying match over the Niners judging the other quarterback prospects, before adding: ‘I believe Mac Mac will eventually be at three. That will be the choice. ‘

And then, like clockwork, Schefter stepped back his explanatory statement. From April 12, six days later.

You can read it in a few different ways, none of which Schefter reflects very well. The most generous interpretation is that he is more intellectual of the organization and now really thinks they have not decided yet. The problem is that he did not provide any of the background straight. He did not say: “I want to make it clear that the 49ers were not locked up in Jones after talks with members of the office and that I was not from the base.” Would such a revelation really matter, of course? Not really. The 49ers front office has no reason to be honest with Schefter, and Schefter is not exactly dispelling rumors that he is being fed with the necessary nuance and skepticism.

What 49ers are going to study on Justin Fields, the QB pro days of Trey Lance

Shanahan is known to be tough with players during the interviews. He will show bad plays. And he will want to know what happened. He wants the player to explain exactly what the play asked for, what he saw and why he made the play.

He also does not want to hear apologies, such as from a high-profile player in a recent draft class who blamed a decidedly negative play on his university coaches.

Shanahan will dig and dig until he has a good sense of how a player is suited for difficult coaching. And then he will move on to the next play and the next for more interrogations.
