Staff arrive for COVID-19 testing before entering the SAP Center for an NHL hockey game between the Vegas Golden Knights and the San Jose Sharks in San Jose, California, Saturday, February 13, 2021.

The Golden Knights beat the Sharks last night in overtime, but had to scramble after the game to find out where to stay.

The hotel that housed the Golden Knights, the downtown Fairmont Hotel, suddenly closed on Friday.

“It’s a first for probably everyone on our team,” defender Nick Holden said.

The Golden Knights packed their bags and, like a normal last day in a city, left for the track and returned to another hotel after the game. They play the Sharks again today at 7:30 pm before leaving for Minnesota as part of a road series with the Wild.

“It was a surreal experience,” coach Pete DeBoer said. “Hopefully it is the end of the COVID year, but it was almost the topping for the last year for everyone in the world. Just another thing thrown at you, another thing to do.

‘Not that I put it in the same breath as handling COVID, but it was just one of the things we threw at ourselves, we handled it and found a way to start well, so good resilience through us group. ”

Called a ‘beacon’ and ‘iconic’ by the San Jose Mercury News, the newspaper was reportedly a victim of the struggling hotel industry in California. Throughout 2020, only 14 notices of non-payment for a loan against hotels in the state were filed. In January alone, there were at least 20.

The Mercury News reports that the owners of the hotel owed between $ 100 and $ 500 million, but hopes to reopen within a few months.

This will affect more than just the Golden Knights. Due to NHL virus protocols, the league designates one hotel in a city that serves as the accommodation of each visiting team to ensure that the hotel adheres to the league rules.

When the St. Louis Blues come to town on Monday, so they will not be staying at the Fairmont Hotel.
