Golden Globes 2021: Regina King receives nomination as best director

Regina King makes history as the only second African-American woman to nod to the best director for the Golden Globes

  • Selma filmmaker Ava DuVernay was the only other African-American woman to receive the best director nomination in 2014
  • This is especially impressive considering that the 50-year-old Oscar winner has crowned the Amazon director’s debut
  • One Night in Miami also has a nod for Best Supporting Actor (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Best Original Song for Speak Now (Leslie Odom Jr. and Sam Ashworth).

Oscar winner Regina King has managed to make history again after the 78th Golden Globe Award was announced on Wednesday morning.

The 50-year-old triple threat is only the second African-American woman to receive a Best Director nomination at the Globes in 2014 after Selma filmmaker Ava DuVernay.

This is especially impressive considering that the critically acclaimed Amazon Studios drama – based on Kemp Powers’ 2013 play – was Regina’s directorial debut.

King is fighting for the honor against two other women – Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) – as well as Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7) and David Fincher (Mank).

Former Hamilton leader Leslie Odom Jr., who played Sam Cooke, received the only acting nod among the One Night in Miami ensemble as best supporting actor.

The 39-year-old Tony winner faces heavy competition against Sacha Baron Cohen, Daniel Kaluuya, Jared Leto and Bill Murray.

Leslie and songwriter Sam Ashworth are also the best original song for Speak Now, which they will likely perform on stage The Beverly Hilton or virtually.
