GoFundMe for Atlanta victim’s son raises $ 1.5 million in less than a day

A GoFundMe campaign launched by the son of a shooting victim in Atlanta has raised more than $ 1.5 million from 38,000 donors in the 19 hours since its inception.

Why it matters: Hyun Jung Grant, 51, was one of six Asian women killed during an armed robbery at Gold Spa on Tuesday night. In all, eight people were killed.

  • Grant’s identity was revealed Friday, along with details of the other victims.
  • In an update Friday, her son Randy Park thanked donors and said, “My mom can rest assured knowing I have the support of the world with me.”

What he says: In his first GoFundMe post, Park calls his mother “one of my best friends and the strongest influence on who we are today.”

  • Grant was a single parent who supported herself and two sons in the United States alone.
  • “By losing her, I put a new lens on the amount of hate in our world.”
  • Park asked for the funds for basic necessities.

Park updated the page on Friday with a message expressing his gratitude.

  • “Thank you very much to everyone and please share the care and kindness you have shown here to anyone you know who feels scared or insecure about the world we live in,” he added.
