Since it was announced last year, many people are calling the new God of war continued on PlayStation 5 “God of War: Ragnarok” by default. This is mainly because Santa Monica Studio and PlayStation have not announced at this stage what the formal name of the next installment in the God of war series will actually be. That said, as a new tease of God of war director and writer Cory Barlog is any indication, it looks like ‘Ragnarok’ will not be in the title after all.
In a new tweet from Barlog on Twitter, the well-known director of a video game shared an article that the God of War: Ragnarok Naming convention. Barlog gave a caption of his own when he shared the tweet and asked, “How come I never heard of this game?” Although not confirmed by him, it appears to be a suggestion God of War: Ragnarok is not the name of the next game in the series after all.

That said, Barlog might just be pulling everyone’s legs with this latest tweet. If you’ve following Barlog on Twitter, you’re probably aware he’s not talking about the following God of war play so much. And even when he does, it is often in sly ways that somehow make fun of the existence of the project.
It can still reason God of War: Ragnarok is very much not the name of the coming sequel. The only reason this title originated in the first place is because the revelation trailer of the game is just the God of war logo next to the words “Ragnarok is coming.” Many then started using God of War: Ragnarok as a shorthand to refer to the forthcoming title, though those working on the game in any capacity have never mentioned it as such.
For now we know everything with absolute certainty about the following God of war is that it will be released on PS5 in 2021. A version of the game for PlayStation 4 may also be in the cards, but the powers that be past Sony have not confirmed or denied this information.
