DETROIT – General Motors on Tuesday planned to manufacture an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup at a new flagship car assembly plant in Detroit.

The truck is part of a previously announced $ 2.2 billion investment in the plant to produce a range of its next-generation EVs, which will launch a fully electric GMC Hummer pickup later this year. Other planned vehicles for the plant include the recently unveiled Hummer EV sports utility vehicle and an autonomous multiple passenger coil, known as the Cruise Origin.

The factory, which GM renamed Factory Zero last year in a pinch for the EV cars with no emissions produced there, is important to the carmaker’s plans for electric vehicles. It is the first of four North American facilities that, according to GM, will transition from manufacturing vehicles with internal combustion engines to EVs. This will be a ground of proof and point of proof for the company’s promise that it can produce profitable electric vehicles.

“The vehicles coming from Factory Zero will change the world and how the world views electric vehicles,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a statement. “The GMC Hummer EV SUV joins its true super-truck stablemate, and Chevrolet will take everything Chevy’s loyal truck buyers like Silverado – and more – and put it in an electric pickup that will serve small and commercial customers. rejoice. “

GM did not want to anticipate when the Chevrolet pickup will go into production at Factory Zero, a 4.5 million-square-foot facility on the outskirts of Detroit and bordering the city of Hamtramck. The Hummer EV pickup is expected to go on sale this fall, followed by the Hummer EV SUV in early 2023.

The new Chevy Silverado EV will, according to GM, have a full distance of more than 400 miles.

The announced vehicles are part of GM’s plan to release 30 new EVs worldwide by 2025 under an investment of $ 27 billion in electric and autonomous vehicles during that period. By now, the company plans to sell at least 1 million motor vehicles annually – en route to being a fully electric car manufacturer by 2035.

General Motors launched the 2022 GMC Hummer EV sports truck, or CUT, online and during national television broadcasts on October 20, 2020.
