Global COVID-19 mortality rate exceeds 3 million

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the worldwide number of confirmed deaths due to COVID-19 on Saturday exceeded 3 million.

By the numbers: The US saw more deaths (566,238) than any other country, followed by Brazil (368,749) and Mexico (211,693).

  • The global death toll hit 2 million in January.
  • There are approximately 12,900 daily deaths around the world associated with the coronavirus on Friday.

Reality test: “The actual death toll from COVID-19 will never be known with any precision,” writes Axios’ Dave Lawler.

  • The actual number is thought to be higher due to possible concealment of data and cases that were overlooked in 2019, reports AP.

The whole picture: “The number of lives lost, as compiled by Johns Hopkins University, is approximately equal to the population of Kiev, Ukraine; Caracas, Venezuela; or the metropolitan Lisbon, Portugal. It is larger than Chicago (2.7 million) and equivalent to Philadelphia and Dallas combined, “adds AP.
