Pitching fueled the Giants through the first three weeks of the season, but with an absent night in the division, the team got going sooner.
Buster Posey returned after missing two days with a swollen left elbow and beating two homers. Then came the coup, an eighth innings that included not one but two three-wayers – by Alex Dickerson and Wilmer Flores – in a 10-7 victory that gave the giants the series victory in Philadelphia with a game that still had to play. .
“It was time for us to put our foot on the gas and score some runs,” Dickerson said. “And we were able to do it against a very difficult campsite, so it was an excellent team victory.”
Dickerson’s homer gave the Giants their first lead of the night, and Flores’s was a pinch. Both dropped out of Connor Brogdon, who in his previous twelve outings of last season did not allow a run, giving up only three hits in total in his six appearances in 2021 that came in Tuesday.
“The kind of offensive outputs like tonight are not going to happen every night, but I think it’s more the kind of offense we are,” said manager Gabe Kapler. ‘It is also an example of one of the most important strengths of our team, which is our bench.
“When we put a starting lineup out there, it’s always difficult because we know we have a few bats on the bench that have to play for us regularly every day.”
Posey, who had an evening of three hits, was dipped on the elbow in Miami on Saturday and he wore a substantial elbow shield on Tuesday. This did not hamper him at all: in the fifth inning, he crushed a first move from Zack Wheeler 428 feet to the left. In the sixth, he did the same on a 3-2 sinker and sent it 396 feet to the left.
It was the first multi-homer game of the year by a Giants player – and Posey’s first since May 28, 2016.
“I thought his fluctuations were wonderful,” Kapler said. “He has had a lot of confidence since he stepped into the coffin of the batter today. He mentioned that he feels good and ready to go. ”
Posey, who was selected last season because he and his wife, Kristen, had just adopted twin daughters who were born early, has four homers in his 11 games.
“People seem to forget when he did not play last year how good he really is,” Dickerson said. “He was just amazing. It was really cool to see him come back, see that fire again and how he handles a yard staff. And then it seems clear what he did with the bat ten years ago. ”
While the offense produced, however, the pitch was not as sharp as usual. The starter Logan Webb, who was in the rotation again while Johnny Cueto missed at least twice with a bar, allowed four runs, three of which were on a homer by Brad Miller in the third.
Webb had a tremendous spring, which could only run in 17 overs. But that has been a different story ever since: Webb allowed 10 runs in four heats, three starts and 15 overs. “I think a bit of that is just his ability to work through some rough spots in the game, maybe it’s a few places here and there,” Posey said before the game.
Jarlín García, who also struggled to open the season, gave Alec Bohm a two-run in fifth place and his ERA is 8.53. Jake McGee, just off the COVID-19 list after two days of the effects of his second vaccination, gave a solo blast by Rhys Hoskins in the ninth prize.
Brandon Belt, who made an excellent over-the-shoulder catch in dirty ground in seventh place, left the game at the bottom of the ninth with what Kapler described as a quake.
