Ghost of Tsushima fans help with real recovery of Tsushima Island

Ghost of Tsushima fans contributed to the restoration of a true Torii gate on the Japanese island of Tsushima. As reported by Siliconera, the crowdfunding project to repair the gate at Watatsumi Shrine is ending at more than 27 million yen. According to a Famitsu article, numerous Ghost of Tsushima fans got behind the funding, and eventually it was able to reach 542% of the initial target of 5 million.

The Watatsumi shrine gate was partially destroyed by a typhoon in September 2020, and repairs are scheduled to begin in April 2021, although pandemic-related delays could delay the process. The creator of the project thanks the fans of the game for their contributions in one of the activity reports as the campaign progressed. A memorial stone will bear the names of all who pledged more than 10,000 yen (approximately $ 95 USD / £ 71 / $ 125 AUD).

Torii gates are commonly used to mark the entrance to a Shinto temple, and have even helped inspire the creation of Star Fox. Watatsumi Shrine is located in Toyotama, one of the three regions found in Ghost of Tsushima.
