PlayStation fans who rocked Sony’s daring black-and-white design for the PlayStation 5 now have a monochrome option, thanks to co-maker Dbrand.
Dbrand now sells replacement plates called Darkplates to match the color of your PlayStation 5 – and as long as the color you want is matte black, you’re fine. Dbrand’s website currently includes customization options for both the Disc Edition and PS5 Digital Edition, though the digital edition is not yet for sale. One set of outer plates costs $ 49 (excluding shipping) for the disc edition.
The outer plates are not a skin. These are brand new components that allow you to replace the side and center panel panels of your PS5. You must therefore install it yourself. Sony dismantled the PS5 in October, showing how the components come loose.
But the demand is huge. Dbrand has already sold out from its first few productions of its Darkplates, and the earliest you can get is in May 2021.
Dbrand is proud of its new product and says on its website: “Go ahead, sue us.” This is presumably a reference to another company’s attempt to sell black PS5 replacement faceplates under the name PlateStation 5. The company changed its name but said that Sony had threatened legal action over its aftermarket faceplates, and finally canceled all orders.
