Georgia teenager accused of stealing nearly $ 1 million from supermarket

Duluth, Georgia A teenager in the suburbs of Atlanta has been arrested on charges of defrauding a supermarket where he worked over a two-week period of nearly $ 1 million. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 19-year-old Tre Brown was arrested Thursday by Gwinnett County detectives on a charge of criminal theft.

He was released on $ 11,200 bail.

Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Corporal Collin Flynn said Brown stole more than $ 980,000 in two weeks in December and January by producing more than 40 proceeds for non-existent items.

Cash from the proceeds, ranging from $ 75 to more than $ 87,000, was placed on credit cards, investigators said.

According to police, Brown used the stolen money to buy two cars, clothes, guns and shoes. Prior to his arrest, the teenager apparently assembled one of the cars, a Chevrolet Camaro, Flynn said.

The investigation began after Kroger’s corporate employees in Cincinnati noticed the transactions.

According to police, Brown stole the money while an employee instructed to report fraudulent transactions was on vacation.

A “large sum of money” was returned to Kroger after the arrest, but it was not clear on Thursday how much was recovered.
