Georgia soccer winners and losers after 2021 National Signature Day

Winner: Georgia’s 2022 Recruitment Class

The Bulldogs’ lone dedication on National Signing Day actually came for the next recruiting class. Georgia has earned a commitment to Bear Alexander, a four-star defensive suit. He is the overall No. 140 player in the 2022 recruiting cycle, the No. 22 player in Texas and the No. 9 defense suit.

Alexander is a second line of defense in Georgia’s 2022 cycle, while joining Tire West. Georgia has the chance to put together an elite defensive line in the 2022 cycle, with 4-star targets that Mykel Williams and Chrisitan Miller will announce in the coming months.

Georgia now has the No. 2 class in the 2022 recruitment cycle behind just the state of Ohio. The Bulldogs started this cycle much faster than in the past, as the Bulldogs had only three commitments for the 2021 class at this point last season. In 2019, the Bulldogs had three 2020 commitments on National Signing Day.

Since the early signing period provided for the early completion of programs, they used January to really focus on the next recruiting class, 2022, in this case, as teams try to put the final touches on the stream.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart gave a reason why the Bulldogs have been more successful in this cycle than ever before.

“We just have a little more time now because you have fewer 2021 kids because your class is almost done,” Smart said. “We have always placed great emphasis on the next class. It has not changed, it just seems to be so. Those children make earlier decisions with the prospect that they may not get visits, or that they will not have the opportunity to go to places and do things. ”

Loser: Site Against Alabama

The rich are getting richer at college football, and Alabama is Jeff Bezos. The Crimson Tide on Wednesday officially locked up the all-time top recruiting class. Then it goes out and adds 4-star safety Terrion Arnold on top of it.

Georgia ends up as the runner-up for Arnold, making him just the latest prospect in the 2021 cycle, where that was the case. Alabama beat Georgia for prospects such as five-star Rus Dallas Turner, defensive tackle Tim Keenan and attacking linebacker Terrence Ferguson.

Alabama, however, did not just beat Georgia for a few prospects. They all strike out. Nick Saban landed Tommy Brockermeyer, an attacking five-star star, from Texas. Alabama got Damon Payne, a five-star defensive suit, from Michigan.

The Crimson Tide also dominated the state of Florida. Alabama has signed seven of the top 15 prospects in the state, though one of the JC Latham played at the IMG Academy after coming from Wisconsin. Florida, Florida and Miami combined for four of the top 15 prospects from the state of Florida.

The Alabama team in 2020 was one of the most dominant in recent memory. It should replace a number of key players from that team. But with this 2021 signing class, it’s clear the Crimson Tide continues to have power.

Winner: Dan Lanning

The Georgia Defense Coordinator decided to stay in Georgia as opposed to the Texas Defense Coordinator. It seems to be literally bearing fruit.

Lanning was one of three Georgia assistants to receive a raise. Dell McGee earns $ 675,000 to $ 800,000. Todd Harley has seen his salary rise from $ 400,000 to $ 450,000 for the 2021 season.

Both are bucket compared to the $ 550,000 raised by Lanning, who will now earn $ 1.7 million. This is more in line with some of the other top defending coordinators in sports.

Georgia has also drawn a number of top defensive prospects in the 2021 signing class, such as 5-star linebackers Xavian Sorey and Smael Mondon, as well as Nyland Green and David Daniel, who are defending the four stars.

Georgia’s defense did not live up to the hype in 2020, but it still led the country to a quick defense and allowed the SEC in yards per game. It was not a difference between the best teams in the country, but the defense in Georgia was also still one of the best units in college football.

Lanning will cut out his work with the new look in 2021 for him. But it is clear that he is considered a top defense coordinator in the country, as his salary now reflects that.

Loser: Excitement

Smart admitted that yesterday did not have the feel of a normal signing day. Georgia has not made a commitment, much less a prospect for the 2021 cycle, as the Bulldogs have already signed 20 members of its No. 3 class for signing in December.

“It’s a bit anticlimactic to talk about the signing class because we’ve been focused on them since they arrived in the middle of the year, and could practice, enroll in school and start practicing with us,” Smart said.

Of Georgia’s twenty signatories, 16 are already on campus and can practice with the team through spring. The number is greater than what is traditionally partly due to the pandemic.

From the Georgia game against Missouri on Dec. 12 to Wednesday, the Bulldogs landed only one player who would sign Sorey at the class. In the 2020 cycle, Georgia entered into commitments from ten players who would sign with Georgia after its December 7 game against LSU in the SEC Championship game.

Georgia was by no means the only team to have had an unchanging Wednesday, as Ohio and Clemson did not add a prospect to their respective classes. It will be worthwhile to monitor in future if the lack of signatures on the national signing day is a by-product of COVID-19, or if COVID-19 will only accelerate more and more players in December once the pandemic is managed.

Winner: Will Muschamp

South Carolina gave his Muschamp $ 12.9 million to no longer be his head coach. Now he will earn $ 300,000 to work in a field service in Georgia next season.

‘He has made a lot of progress to help me [and] help our staff, ”said Smart. ‘He will be able to help the coaches, and he will work on the defensive side of the ball. It is very helpful to have a man in two places in our conference as head coach. ”

Muschamp had a number of reasons for being in Georgia. His son is a run-up quarterback. It is also his alma mater and he has had a long relationship with Smart.

As head coach, Muschamp has not yet worked as head coach in Florida or South Carolina. But he is still one of the leading defensive minds in the sport. He also has a strong record of developing defensive backs, something Georgia can now really use.

Smart does not think Muschamp’s coaching days on the field are over. And one only has to look at Alabama to see how a season or two as an analyst can help rehabilitate and revitalize a coach.

“His family has been in his focus here recently because I know he feels he has moved his family all over the country,” Smart said. “It’s an opportunity for him to come back to come back to them and be with them and see his son play.”
