Georgia lands All-American defensive setback

Kirby Smart said he only wants to use the transfer portal on a needs basis. It appears that Georgia’s head coach has found a player who fits into secondary need, as Georgia has made a commitment to West Virginia safety Tykee Smith.

Smith announced his commitment to Georgia via Twitter.

The defensive rugby in the transfer has earned several All-American honors in its two seasons in West Virginia. As a sophomore, he intercepted two passes, had five departures and 61 tackles.

Smith has a history with Georgia’s new defensive back as Jahmile Addae has spent the past two seasons in West Virginia. Addae takes the job for Charlton Warren, who left to become the defensive back coach at Indiana.

“I’m much more interested in his relationship with the players, how he treats the players, he can develop the players, he has a skill to coach them,” Smart said of Addae. “And that’s what I’m talking about below. the impression was of Jahmile-wise, his attitude, intelligent, he thinks things out before he says it, and he did a tremendous job of winning the confidence of the players, while also learning a fairly complicated defense. “

Smith signed with West Virginia as part of the 2019 signing class and he has three years in consideration. He is from Philadelphia and was a 3-star recruiter, although he has surpassed the rankings so far in his Georgia career.

The NCAA will meet in April to vote on changing the transfer rule. If the governing body is to single out the rule of players one season, Smith must be immediately eligible to assist Georgia during the 2021 season.

Georgia’s biggest need is in the corner position, with the Bulldogs having to replace Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell, DJ Daniel and Tyrique Stevenson. Smith, however, projects more than a safety or a star in Georgia’s defense. Stevenson and Mark Webb manned that position last season.

Since Smart took over in 2016, the Bulldogs have managed to bring in defensive rugby, as Maurice Smith and JR Reed have played a significant role in secondary Georgia. Safeties Lewis Cine and Chris Smith both return, giving Georgia a very strong starting experience.

West Virginia head coach Neal Brown spoke to reporters last week and discussed Smith’s departure from the program.

‘I want to tackle Tykee’s departure first, a mutual separation, and that’s a lot of some relationships. “I’m sure everyone was here,” Brown said. ‘It’s just getting to a point where it’s best for both parties, and that’s where we’re been. Nothing negative to say about it. I really went productive on the field here for two years, and I wish him the best. ”

Smith will arrive in Georgia later this summer and will not go through the remaining eight spring drills for Georgia. The Bulldogs currently have 82 bursaries, with the addition of Smith moving them to 83. Georgia still has room to add players.

Georgia continues to practice on Tuesday. G-Day is on April 17th. Georgia’s first game is on September 4 against Clemson.
