Georgia aquarium otters positive for virus causing COVID-19 – WSB TV channel 2

ATLANTA – The Georgia Aquarium said Sunday that some of their otters have tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.

The Asian small-climbing otters showed mild breathing symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, mild lethargy and they started coughing.

“We are pleased to report that they are doing well, and we are expected to fully recover,” said aquarium officials. “They are not exhibited and are cared for behind the scenes by our expert animal health and care teams.”

The aquarium believes the animals got the infection from an asymptomatic staff member, despite recommending the recommended health and safety protocols.

“The risk of animal-to-human transmission is incredibly rare,” officials said. “The Asian otters with small claws in the aquarium do not have direct contact with guests.”
