Genshin Impact Devs award-winning PS5s, graphics cards via RNG

Raffles and gift deliveries are not uncommon at company parties, but the company is behind it. Genshin Impact has gone a step further and awarded randomly accessible graphics cards and PS5s to employees in thanks for making one of the hottest new free play gacha games of last year.

“MiHoYo, the developers of Genshin Impact, held their annual employee meeting where they gave away a bunch of electronics to employees in a lottery, ”said Daniel Ahmad, senior data analyst at Niko Partners, wrote on Twitter yesterday. Accompanying photos showed giant stacks of iPhones, Nintendo Switches, GeForce RTX graphics cards and PlayStation 5s, the latter of which were particularly difficult to get hold of people after persistent stock shortages.

The irony, of course, as PC player pointed out, is it Genshin Impact is itself largely based on lottery—based on random number generators (RNG)in which players earn money in the game or pay real money for the chance to unlock barely new characters. Some are much harder to get than others, leading to players scouring and burning resources waiting for the top characters like Venti to fall. Some players spent a lot of money on the game in this way, one of the reasons Genshin Impact earned nearly $ 400 million in the first few months, according to mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower.

To celebrate the lucrative launch of the game, MiHoYo allegedly used a similar drop-down system to award the limited supply of gaming equipment it planned to give away to employees in addition to other bonuses. According to a screenshot shared by Ahmad, staff had a 30% chance of a Nintendo Switch, a 21% chance of an RTX 3070 graphics card, a 16% chance of a PS5 and a 1% chance of a combined Apple Watch Series 6 and iPhone 12 Pro Max bundle available.

For now, it looks like you have at least as good a chance to get a PS5 by getting a job Genshin Impact as you do to refresh your Amazon cart.
