Genesis breaks world record for most drones in the air

Drone shows are fast becoming the tool of choice for people and companies that want to get your attention, and Genesis knows this all too well. The car brand owned by Hyundai marked its entry into China by simultaneously breaking the Guinness World Record for Most Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, with 3,281 drones displaying its logo and otherwise advertising on Shanghai on March 29.

This is a significant improvement over the previous record holder, Shenzhen Damoda Intelligent Control Technology. The company flew ‘only’ 3051 drones in September 2020. This in turn shattered a record of a 2200 drone show in Russia, just a few days earlier. Intel, which has a reputation as a drone light show, last claimed the record with 2,066 drones flying over Folsom, California in July 2018.

Achievements like these usually rely on choreography software that asks drones to form certain shapes while coordinating the swarm to avoid collisions.

This is obviously an advertising stunt, and it would not be surprising if another company soon finds a way to set up Genesis. However, it shows how much drone shows have progressed within a few years, and it can easily foster competition between companies determined to offer robust extravagances.
