Gaza rocket hits southern Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) – The Israeli army says a projectile fired from the Gaza Strip landed in the south of the country on Thursday night, breaking weeks of relative cross-border calm.

There were no reports of injuries or damage. Sirens warn of incoming rockets in the city of Sderot and its environs in the Negev desert.

In response, Israeli planes hit early Friday at three facilities belonging to Hamas, the militant group that rules Gaza. The military said the airstrikes targeted a weapons production site, a weapons smuggling tunnel and a training ground.

No Palestinian group has claimed responsibility for the Palestinian enclave’s rocket. Israel usually blames the Hamas group for any violence stemming from Gaza.

The attack comes at the end of Independence Day, which honors the creation of Israel after the end of the British mandate in 1948.

Hamas and Israel are engaging in an unofficial ceasefire mediated by mediators, including Egypt and Qatar. Hamas says Israel does not commit to the terms of the ceasefire, which envisages a significant easing of Israeli economic restrictions on Gaza.
