Nearly 1.5 million verified signatures are needed to put the question of the revocation of Newsom to the vote, and Wednesday is the deadline to submit the necessary signatures. As of Monday, all indications are that Newsom’s opponents have reached the goal.
“We were worried about the sacrifices it would take,” he said of the implementation of the country’s first home order last year. “We have made sure that science – not politics – drives our decisions.”
The newly launched counterattack boasts big names supporting Newsom, including Democratic Sens Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Alex Padilla of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey, as well as Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont. California representatives Katie Porter and Ro Khanna, both Democrats, also support the effort, as does Stacey Abrams of Georgia, who advocates suffrage.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden was opposed to the attempt to oust Newsom.
The California Democratic Party contributed $ 250,000 to the Newsom setback, while the Republican National Committee made the same contribution to bring about the repeal.
If the recall attempt is eligible, it is unclear which month it will end up in California’s vote, as there are a series of bureaucratic steps that must take place at various levels of state government before the state governor can formally call the recall election.
