In a tweet from later in the day, Brooks wrote to Lady Gaga with a compliment and a thank you.
“You were fantastic and mundane today,” the tweet read. “A national treasure. Please say thank you to Frederick and Miss Sarah! They rescued a cowboy today. Oh, and tell Miss Sarah to embrace her mom for me! Love, g”
People decoded the tweet and pointed out that Brooks was referring Frederic Aspiras, Gaga’s hairstylist, and Sarah Tanno, her makeup artist. Brooks’ invitation to perform comes from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and at a virtual press conference on his acceptance, the Republican country singer explained that he did not view his presence as ‘a political statement’, but ‘as a statement of unity’.
“It is an honor for me to serve. I had to serve the Clinton administration with the concert of the century, the Bush administration with points of light,” he said, as reported by People. “It’s one of those things that, if my family is in the area, no matter who the president is, it’s an honor to be asked.”
He was also asked to perform at Donald Trumpinauguration in 2017, but declined due to tour commitments. For Brooks and other famous grandparents, check out 36 celebrities you did not know were grandparents.
