Garland’s response to Cruz’s query over Cuomo inquiry ‘not good enough’: Rep Stefanik

Merrick Garland’s response Monday to a question about a possible conflict of interest in any New York government investigation by Andrew Cuomo was ‘not good enough’, rep. Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., told Fox News Primetime.

Ted Cruz, R-Texas, during the Garland confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee noted that Manhattan’s acting U.S. attorney, Audrey Strauss, is the mother-in-law of Melissa DeRosa, a top assistant to Cuomo. DeRosa admitted to Democratic state lawmakers earlier this month that the governor’s administration withheld data on deaths in nursing homes because officials “froze” on the prospect of a federal investigation.

“Would you at least commit to not having the investigation done by someone with a conflict of interest?” Ask Cruz for Garland.

“With all these investigations, the Department of Justice is open to evidence of fraud, false statements, violations of the law. It normally begins in the appropriate manner in the relevant U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Garland replied. “I know nothing of the facts, but I can guarantee you that anyone with a conflict of interest will not investigate.”

Stefanik told host Katie Pavlich that Garland’s response shows he is not reading the basic news.

“As the American people know, this is a serious corruption scandal at the highest levels of the New York government,” she said. We need a much clearer answer from the nominee to be AG. [commiting to] to make sure there is an independent apolitical, fair investigation. And when it comes to obstruction of justice, it’s not just accusations Katie, it’s caught on tape.

‘It was captured on tape during a Zoom call with members of the New York State Assembly, and therefore it is also the Democrats who are speaking out about the need for an independent federal investigation, and some even suggest that the governor and the governor, I said, must resign. ‘

Families of those who lost loved ones in nursing homes in New York added Stefanik: “they deserve a commitment for the nominee of the AG that it would be an independent investigation, and he should get better soon because the answer does not good enough for the American people. ‘
