GameStop reported earnings Tuesday. Why there can be good news.

Placer.ai reviewed visitor counts and noted that GameStop (ticker: GME) weekly visits decreased by approximately 18% during the week of December 28th. The decline slowed to 12% the following week, but visitor trends slowed over the next four weeks.

The retailer saw trends improve after the week that began on February 15, when foot traffic fell 26% year-on-year. The weekly visits decreased by only 3.9% during the week beginning on March 8th. The firm notes that this was the smallest year-on-year gap for GameStop in months.

“GameStop has returned to the visiting levels found in early January and appears to be on a strong recovery trajectory in the spring,” Ethan Chernofsky, vice president of marketing at Placer.ai, wrote in a post.

While a reduction in Covid-19 restrictions in some states, coupled with less severe weather, may be the most important factor that could lead to improved visits, Chernofsky notes that the brand may also get a boost from renewed attention from the recent GameStop. share story.

According to Wall Street’s consensus estimate, sales of the same store were up 4.7% year-on-year during the fiscal fourth quarter, which ended in January, according to FactSet. The company announced on January 11 that same-store sales had increased by 4.8% during the nine-week holiday period, which ended on January 2. Nevertheless, e-commerce sales have risen by 309%, meaning foot traffic may not be the full picture.

The Placer.ai team notes that AMC Theaters also saw a decline from a year-on-year drop of 79.2% during the week of February 15 to a drop of 47.9% in the week of 8 March seen.
