We love RPGs. You like RPGs. Everyone loves a good RPG, and 2020 happened to be a fantastic year for them. Whether it was newly released full of new content or brand new experiences that took established franchises in new directions, there really was something for everyone. However, we simply have to work out what was the best of the best. Here are the best RPGs from PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 of 2020.
We’ve lost track of how many times Final Fantasy VII Remake made us grin during the release time like idiots, but that’s the power of this shockingly well realized remake. Performing the original Final Fantasy VII justice would never have been easy, but somehow Square Enix managed to recapture the magic while also expanding on its world and beloved characters. What’s more, the combat system is exemplary – a true evolution of the proven ATB formula of the series. Of course, this is only the first chapter in a new saga, but we can not wait to see what is next.

Demon’s Souls on PS5 is exactly the same game as the original 2009, which means it’s still a pretty excellent RPG. Five big and mysterious worlds are currently offering the most terrifying next-generation game, but you can conquer their inhabitants in any way possible. Build variety is not in the Demon’s Souls, with a long list of weapons and armor to suit your character and numerous stats to strengthen if you’ve collected enough Souls for it. It’s both the best game currently available on PS5 and one of the biggest RPGs of 2020.

A game we called Yakuza: Like a Dragon Quest here in the Push Square office, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is one of the most interesting RPGs we’ve ever played. It takes everything we already love about Yakuza – the realistic environment, the brilliant characters, the gripping stories, the insane side activities – and combines it with … A party-driven adventure with turn-based battles? Yep, and it works shockingly well. RGG Studio has taken a real risk with this one, and it is bearing fruit in one of the most memorable and unique games of 2020.

Our 2017 Game of the Year is back and better than ever – despite it already being a 10/10 masterpiece. Persona 5 Royal is not only one of the absolute best RPGs on PS4 – it is one of the best Japanese RPGs ever made. A delightful delight for the senses, and improving to an extent where the original Persona 5 becomes completely redundant. Royal’s new finale is incredible, his new characters are fantastic and the numerous improvements in the game elevate it to previously unimaginable heights.
