Samsung makes some of our favorite smartwatches to connect to an Android smartphone, and out of the pattern we might get another Galaxy Watch for 2021. In a twist, it could also run Android at its core.
According to a report by GalaxyClub, Samsung is working on two new smartwatch models for 2021, both containing model numbers indicating that they will be the successors of the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch 3 rather than the Galaxy Watch Active series from Samsung. The relevant model numbers are SM-R86x and SM-R87x, with the previous Galaxy Watch 3 having SM-R8xx model numbers on its various models.
Most likely, the two model numbers we see so far are just different sizes of watch, with the final number indicating the difference between Bluetooth and LTE models.
However, it is out of the question that Samsung will release another Galaxy Watch in 2021. Looking back, the original Galaxy Watch was followed up the following year with both Galaxy Watch Active models (the first has a very short lifespan), and the following year the Galaxy Watch 3. It is reasonable to think that a Watch Active would enter 2021, but the evidence so far suggests otherwise.
Another important puzzle piece for this story comes out Ice Universe. The Samsung leak says that for its 2021 Galaxy Watch, Samsung will abandon the internal Tizen operating system it has been using for the past few years in exchange for Google’s Android, note: It has not says Wear OS.
Why would Samsung go for Tizen on its smartwatches for Android? While Wear OS is critically despised and Tizen watches are generally praised, it looks like a bad move. However, switching to Android has advantages. Firstly, the app and watch catalog on Wear OS is much better than that of Samsung, and the same goes for safety, as Tizen has been in hot water several times in the past due to its security flaws. This is especially the first time that Samsung believes that Tizen is on its portable locks.
It has yet to be seen, but Samsung will probably debut its 2021 Galaxy Watch later this year with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and whatever other devices the company has up its sleeve.
