According to the retailer, this Maybach 57 S coupe was newly ordered by the eccentric former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The fourth of just eight units built by Maybach under license from Maybach did not bring the two-colored coupe into the hands of the dictator until it was overthrown in 2011. Whoever finally took possession of the car drove it sparingly; it currently shows only 2300 kilometers (1429 miles) on the odometer.
Outwardly, the 57 S coupe is essentially just an abbreviated version of the normal 57 S without the rear doors. The front and rear fascinations draw inspiration from the wild Exelero concept, but other than that, it’s all standard Maybach. Under the hood sits a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 that made 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque when it was new.
Autoleitner, the dealer who sells the car, listed it on its website for € 795,000 (about $ 964,000). While this may seem like a lot of money for an S-Class coupe, just remember: these cars sold for about the same amount. And because they are so rare, the chances are high that they will not decrease much.
U.S. buyers will be saddened to learn that importing this car for use on U.S. roads will be nearly impossible until it turns 25 years old. But if you have nearly $ 1 million to spend on an old Maybach-based Maybach, chances are you have an overseas refuge. One that would benefit from a bit of dictatorial flair in the garage.
