Fujifilm’s GFX 100S plugs a huge 102-megapixel sensor into a compact bowl

On the design front, the GFX 100S looks different from all previous GFX cameras. To begin with, it is smaller, with the weatherproof body weighing just 900 grams or 1.9 pounds. It now has a large top display instead of the shutter speed switch found on the GFX 50S, and a mode button instead of an ISO switch. All these things are set instead of the front and back buttons, with the top screen to show the settings. An AF joystick is also new.

With the company’s latest X processor, it can handle up to 5 fps – impressively considering the enormous image sizes. It will be easier to keep the shots sharp even in low light, thanks to the 5-axis body stabilization that can reduce the shaking by 6 times.

The new processors also let it focus as fast as 0.16 seconds in very low light up to -5.5 EV. This is aided by phase detection pixels covering almost 100 percent of the frame. It also features continuous AF detection and face / eye detection which is ideal for the type of portrait work for which a camera is designed.

If you want to take 4K video with a shallow, cinematic depth of field, the GFX 100S is the most capable large sensor camera to date from Fujifilm. You can record 4K up to 30 fps in 10-bit 4: 2: 0 F-log recording internally, or output with 10-bit 4: 2: 2 F-Log or 12-bit RAW to an external recorder. However, 1080p slo-mo is limited to 60 fps. Files can be recorded in Long Gop (200 Mbps) or All Intra at up to 400 Mbps.

Fujifilm's GFX 100S has a huge 102-megapixel sensor and a compact body. It is shown here being held by someone's side by his leg, just after the camera and leg clipped.

Fujifilm

The GFX 100S has the same battery as in the X-T4, but can deliver up to 460 shots at a charge, Fujifilm said. However, it is not available with a battery grip like the GFX 50S. Other features include a 3.69 million dots OLED color finder with 100 percent coverage, dual SD UHS-II card slot, micro-HDMI, microphone, headphones and USB-C 3.2 ports and a 2.36 million dot, three-way tilt touch screen.

With the GFX 100S, Fujifilm has taken a big step to make its large format cameras more modern, but it is not getting cheap. It will arrive in March 2021 for only $ 6,000 for the body. Fujifilm also unveiled the GF80mm f / 1.7 lens, an extremely fast prime that will create ‘beautifully smooth bokeh’ according to Fujifilm. It also arrives in March for $ 2,300.
