Fujifilm unveils GFX100S medium format: 102MP, 5-axis IBIS, $ 6,000

Fujifilm has announced the GFX100S, a camera that takes the “groundbreaking ideas” of the GFX100 and rethinks it with a focus on portability. The result is a compact, high-performance medium-format camera that is similar to full-frame equivalents and weighs only 1.9 pounds.

Fujifilm says the GFX100S is far more advanced than any GFX system camera and combines the best of Fujifilm’s imaging technology into a compact camera body.

102 Megapixels

Fujifilm says the 102-megapixel rear sensor is powered by its high-performance quad-core X-processor 4-CPU. It should be noted that Fujifilm still insists on calling it a “large format” sensor, but it is in fact a medium format sensor.

The GFX100S medium format sensor is about 1.7 times larger, and Fujifilm claims that it is ‘improved’ to be incredibly sensitive to light. The company says it offers a significant advantage over smaller sensors when it comes to producing images with low depth of field, dynamic range, true color reproduction and high ISO performance.

Fujifilm also packs 19 “exclusive” Fujifilm Film Simulation modes in the GFX100S, including the new “Nostalgic Neg.”

Nostalgic Neg, reminiscent of American new color photography, which originated in the 1970s, continues this movement by enabling image makers to explore the limits of photographic creativity through the deliberate use of color.

High focus autofocus

Fujifilm says that the phase detection pixels on the sensor cover almost 100% of the GFX100S sensor and can achieve focus in as little as 0.16 seconds, even in low light levels up to -5.5EV (specifically tested with the FUJINON Lens GF80mmF1. 7 R WR -lens). Thanks to the aforementioned X-Processor 4 processor, the GFX100S also has an updated focus tracking algorithm with Tracking AF and Face / Eye AF.

5-axis internal image stabilization

The GFX100S implements a newly designed IBIS system that, according to the company, dramatically increases the camera’s capability in handheld devices. Compared to the unit found in FUJIFILM GFX100, the IBIS mechanism on the inside of GFX100S is 20% smaller and 10% lighter. Despite this reduction in
size, the five-axis system offers 6-stop CIPA-rated image stabilization, an improvement of 0.5 stops over GFX100.

Compact size and intuitive controls

The body of the GFX100S is 5.9 centimeters wide, 4.09 centimeters long and 3.4 centimeters deep, which according to Fujifilm is comparable to many full-frame cameras (although they do not say ‘mirrorless’ full-frame cameras). That said, it’s pretty compact for a camera with a sensor of this size as well as an IBIS system behind it, which is commendable. The GFX100S is 1.1 pounds lighter than the GFX100, but Fujifilm claims that despite its weight reduction, it maintains the same level of stationary and video performance.

The GFX100S is designed to operate at temperatures as low as -10 ° C (14 ° F) and to be dust and moisture resistant. It is built with a magnesium alloy casing that is deliberately 1 mm denser around the lens mount compared to GFX100, which provides greater support for larger G Mount lenses.

The camera features the classic PASM rotary knob with six programmable custom options, as well as an easy access switch located next to the model switch to quickly switch between silent and video modes. The back of the camera has a tiltable 3.2 inch touch LCD of 2.36 million dots.

Medium format video

The GFX100S can record 4K videos at up to 30 frames per second in 16: 9 aspect ratio as well as 17: 9 aspect ratio in H.264 or H.265 codecs. Footage can be recorded at bit rates of up to 400 Mbps in 10-bit 4: 2: 0-F log stored internally on an SD card, or exported to an external recording device via the camera’s HDMI port word.

Speaking of HDMI, using an Atomos Ninja V Monitor recorder, the GFX100S can set up 4Kp30 recordings through its HDMI port in 10-bit 4: 2: 2 F-Log or 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW . Simultaneous output of RAW recordings and footage in F-Log or Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) with an applied film simulation mode is also possible.

The GFX100S is expected to be available for $ 5,999.95 from March 2021, and an optional handle accessory will be available for about $ 149 at the same time.
