The one-patient screening study identified the patient using ground turkey by Plainville Brands, LLC. An intact, unopened package of Plainville Brands ground turkey collected at this patient’s home tested positive for Salmonella Hadar and was genetically related to the sample of the patient. Evidence gathered so far does not link all diseases to this institution. Based on the ongoing investigation, additional products from other businesses may be involved. FSIS is continuing to work with CDC and state and local public health partners on this investigation and will provide updated information as soon as it becomes available.

Consumption of contaminated food Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial diseases transmitted by food. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the infected product. The disease usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some people, however, the diarrhea can be so severe that the patient has to be admitted to the hospital. Older adults, infants and people with a weakened immune system are more likely to develop a serious illness. People who are concerned about an illness should contact their healthcare provider.

FSIS advises all consumers to prepare their raw meat products safely, including fresh and frozen, and uses only raw minced turkey cooked to a temperature of 165 ° F. The only way to confirm that the poultry item is at a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures the internal temperature, https://www.fsis.usda.gov/ safetempchart.
