It is the nightmare moment when a skier is chased by a bear through the mountain while passengers watch in horror with a chairlift.

Footage shows the young tourist skiing all his life while the brown bear quickly followed him up the slope at a ski resort in Predeal, Romania.

Videos of the chase were posted on social media, with passengers on the nearby chairlift screaming and warning the man to keep fleeing.

One passenger can be heard shouting, ‘Come on, the bear is chasing you! Faster! Do not shoot back! ‘, Report Romania Insider.

The man seems to be struggling to keep his momentum down the slope while those on the chairlift try to help him by whistling and screaming to scare the bear.

Eventually, the fast-thinking skier throws his backpack on the ground, pulling the bear down just long enough for him to get to safety.

The mountain gendarmes told digi24. Three calls were made on that day to make observations. There is one of the calls over the slope where the chase took place.

The slope was allegedly closed during the incident.

A spokesman for the Gendarmerie’s land inspectorate, Ion Zaharia, told Digi24 that the man did the right thing by keeping the bear busy with the discarded backpack.

He added that the potentially fatal incident for this time of year was not unusual and that fewer reports have been made in recent years than in previous years.

After the incident, authorities in Brașov issued two Ro-Alert messages to warn residents of the area about the danger.

In the week before the incident, another report of a bear on a slope in the nearby Clăbucet resort was released.

Bergkloppe arrived in an off-road vehicle to chase the bear into the forest and said they were relocating the bear to another area.

About 6,000 brown bears live known in Romania.

It is legal to hunt the animals, a measure introduced by the country’s government in 2019 in an effort to control their numbers.
