France, UK condemn US violent scenes

Hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday (January 6) in an attempt to overthrow his election defeat, fighting police in the hallways and certifying the election of Democratic President Joe Biden with hours delayed.

French President Emmanuel Macron posted a video on his social media accounts in the early hours of Thursday (January 7) showing the hashtag of “#WeAreOne”.

“I just wanted to express our friendship and our faith in the United States. What happened in Washington DC today is definitely not American. We believe in the strength of our democracies. We believe in the strength of American democracy,” he said. Macron said.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said on Thursday that the storming of the US Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump was “terribly beyond words” and called on Trump to condemn the violence.

EMMANUEL MACRON: I just wanted to express our friendship and our faith in the United States. What happened in Washington DC today is certainly not America. We believe in the strength of our democracies. We believe in the strength of American democracy.

PRITI PATEL: Well, look, I think first of all, the – just the level of language and rhetoric – comments really helped to incite the violence. And I just think there is no room for violence. And that’s just awful in terms of what we’ve seen, unacceptable.

And honestly, America needs to move on, have the transition that is absolutely essential, and the type of transition that America is known for, when it comes to handing over between different political parties after an election period.

But honestly, the violence we saw was just as horrible, and there is no justification for it. Well, his comments led directly to the violence. And so far he has not condemned the violence, and that is completely wrong.
