Fortnite’s Newest Hero: GI Joe’s Snake Eyes

The world of GI Joe, Hasbro’s child-friendly military toy line (and the last line of defense against the terrorist organization Cobra), is now in Fortnite.

GI Joe’s GI Joe’s Snake Eyes is the latest hero to join Epic Games’ battle royale game, joining like Din Djarin and Grogu (also known as The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda), Master Chief of Halo, Kratos of God or War, and Sarah Connor and the Terminator’s T-800.

Epic teased the addition of GI Joe characters on Thursday, when the creative director teased Donald Mustard tweeted an image of himself reading a collection of vintage Marvel GI Joe comics. In particular, Mustard read Marvel’s number 21 GI Joe, in which Snake Eyes undertakes a rescue mission at a Cobra castle. The issue shows Snake Eyes jumping from a C-130 plane Fortnite where-we-droppin’-boys-style.

FortniteThe current season is about heroes from far and wide. Chapter 2 Season 5 of Fortnite contains a story arc called Zero Point, which focuses on Agent Jones’ mission to summon hunters from realities beyond Epic’s game.

GI Joe’s current incarnation, rooted in the toy ownership of 1982, has been explored over the past four decades in comics, comics, video games and live action movies. A new game, GI Joe: Operation Blackout, was released in October on a lower response. A new live-action film focusing on the silent ninja Snake Eyes, starring Henry Golding, will be released in 2022.
