Fortnite fans speculate about who The Foundation spoke about, a character who in the movie and a match in which the match started season 6. The prevailing theory is that this is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, but there are also competing ideas. None of this matters much, but it does Fortnite players do what they do best: speculate wildly.

Let’s look at the facts. On March 16, the day before season 6 launched, Johnson posted a cryptic Instagram video in which he talks about the importance of March 16 ‘in a certain culture’ and how ‘there is connective tissue between that world and my world is’. The video ends with him saying, “It’s all done to strengthen and develop the power and strength known as … The Foundation,” before raising his eyebrow meaningfully.

It seems to many to be clear evidence Fortnite fans. Others pointed out The Foundation’s armor has a resemblance to Johnson’s tattoos. Others note that ‘rock’ and ‘foundation’ have similar meanings. Eurogamer reports that the foundation’s voting lines are in a folder named “DJ” in the code of the game. On Reddit, players pointed out that Donald Mustard, chief creative officer of Epic, likes Johnson’s Instagram video as further proof of the theory.

Johnson, however, is not the only possible voice. Players also speculate that the foundation is voiced by Keifer Sutherland or even Donald Mustard, who devises various evidences for and against their preferred candidate. While one player on Reddit sums things up briefly: “It’s stupid.”

It is stupid! Who cares who the character pronounced and who the next celebrity is to be sucked in Fortniteie will be? But Fortnite has always been an amazing creation engine for wild theories, with players pinning metaphorically red strings between each card change and Twitter teaser to speculate what will happen next. As more and more crossovers entered the game, I found the fan to have less fun, more dependent on pop culture knowledge than to thoroughly detach the theories from any reality other than those created by people who have too much time to play Fortnite. It feels like some good old fashioned Fortnite player strangeness, the kind I miss.

My current favorite Fortnite Season 6 theory deals with a new skin called Raz, which has tattoos similar to the runes on Kevin The Cube from previous seasons. This is in line with another theory that the towers of season 6 are in places similar to the runes that Kevin left when he was scroll around on the map. These are the kind of grainy things YouTube videos are made for, and I’m here for everything. Screw the rock. Bring back the cube, and let the players’ creative juices flow.

(The Rock, if you are reading this, do not defeat me.)
