Former QB Dwayne Haskins to visit Steelers on Thursday

The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking at the QB market early.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Dwayne Haskins paid a visit to the Steelers on Thursday, according to sources informed of the situation.

At the end of December, Haskins was cut off by the Washington Football Team before the end of the season, after only 13 starts in less than two years.

The former first-round pick also recently visited the Carolina Panthers.

The Steelers surprisingly did not upgrade their QB room in 2020 and ride alongside Mason Rudolph and Josh Dobbs behind Ben Roethlisberger. As the future of Big Ben is in doubt beyond this season, the meeting with Haskins is an initial indication that Pittsburgh wants to look for young callers in the coming season.

The quick, if nominal, interest in Haskins highlights the latent talent that the Ohio State product offers. A former first-round pick, the QB, has a big arm that can spray the ball all over the field. Poor mechanics and problems with the reading defense, however, led to inconsistent play. Concerns from outside the field emanating from Washington led to his release.

Haskins possesses talent as a club willing to sustain the 23-year-old who needs experience and positive coaching to get his career on track. Under Mike Tomlin, behind Big Ben, it could be a positive landing spot for both parties if the visit leads to a job.
