Former NFL player Vincent Jackson’s brain has been donated to CTE research as new details about the death come to light

The family of former NFL receiver Vincent Jackson has donated his brain to researchers from Boston University’s CTE Center as new details surrounding his death emerged on Thursday.

A spokesman for Jackson’s family told The New York Times that they had made the decision to better understand what led to his sudden death earlier this week.

“Vincent who he was wanted to help as many people as possible,” Allison Gorrell told the Times on Wednesday. “It’s something his family wanted to do to get answers to some of their questions.”

Jackson’s family said shortly after the old WRBQ radio of the Sheriff Chad Chronister in Hillsborough County that the unpublished Jackson autopsy report showed signs of ‘chronic alcoholism’ and that the family believed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

“It’s just speculation, but what the family is telling me is that he suffered from CTE,” he said. “They believe he had a lot of concussion problems. If you suffer from it, you are not yourself, you are not your normal self. And they wholeheartedly believe that all these actions are the result of what he suffered while playing. in the NFL. ‘

Gorrell told the Times that the sheriff did not speak to the family.

Jackson, 38, was found dead Monday in a hotel room in Brandon, Florida. Police said he was reported missing on February 10, but that he had been located at the hotel where he had been staying since he first checked in on January 11.

New details surrounding Jackson’s death were released Thursday.

According to the initial case summary obtained by ESPN, Jackson was tracked down by police on February 12 as part of a welfare investigation. On February 13 and 14, hotel staff allegedly entered his room and saw him on the couch, but ‘assumed he was sleeping and leaving the room’.

They re-entered his room on Monday and saw he was not moving and called 911.

There were no clear signs of trauma or injury.

The three-time Pro Bowler was drafted into the second round in 2005 by the San Diego Chargers where he played seven years. He was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012 where he handled a number of injuries. He last played for the team in 2016, but just two years later he announced his retirement.
