An Iowa Department of Public Safety (Dowa) official was shot dead by Michael Lang, a former sheriff’s candidate in the state, authorities announced Saturday.
Sergeant Jim Smith died during a riot at Lang’s home on Friday, following a previous altercation with police officers.
Lang was stopped Friday night for a traffic offense before assaulting the police officer by removing his firearm and shotgun and then placing the officer in the basement.
Other officers arrived at the scene and told Lang to drop the weapon. Lang apparently shouted: ‘Come and get me’ before he got into his vehicle and drove to his house.
Lang’s father warned authorities that his son had several weapons in him.
Four patrol officers, including ao. Smith entered the house with a K-9 unit before Smith was shot afterwards.
Lang locked himself in his home when two patrol officers retreated to the basement while other officers removed Smith from the home.
The former sheriff’s candidate in the province allegedly shouted at officials about Smith’s shooting and ‘spoke out about the desire to shoot more police officers’.

Near midnight, more officers entered the house with an armored personnel carrier.
Lang apparently opened fire on the carrier, after which three officers fired back and Lang shot several times.
Lang has been admitted to hospital and is still in critical condition. He is charged with first-degree murder and is being held on a $ 1 million bond.
No other officers were injured in the exchange.
Commissioner Steve Bayens said Smith “died a hero” and “sacrificed himself to protect others.”
“We are hurting, we are angry,” Bayens said. “But rest assured we are not broken. We will continue to bear the burdens of our communities while bearing our own. We will continue to stand in the gap of good and evil, for that is what we are called to do. do as Jim. “
Gov. Kim Reynolds said flags would be flown at half-mast in honor of Smith’s memory and the service he rendered in the line of duty.

Smith, a 27-year-old veteran of the Iowa DPS, leaves behind a wife and two children.
