Former giant Alex Tanney gets job in Eagles’ coaching staff

A former New York Giants quarterback now has a coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

No, this is not Eli Manning.

Two days after Alex Tanney, 33, retired from the Giants, he returned to the NFL as an offensive quality control coach for the Eagles.

Although Tanney has only played two games in the NFL, he has had a nine-year career in the league and has often had a coaching mentorship for younger players. He was a rookie at the Chiefs in 2012 when Nick Sirianni, the new Eagles coach, was the receiver for receivers.

Tanney’s characteristic moment on the field was when he replaced Manning in the fourth quarter of a win on December 15, 2019, Manning’s last start and appearance in his 16-year career with Big Blue.

Tanney will work directly with new offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who was in charge of the Los Angeles Chargers offense last season. Steichen also worked with Sirianni when the two were on the Chargers’ coaching staff a few years ago. Sirianni has been the Colts ‘attacking coordinator for the past three seasons before being named the Eagles’ head coach.

It remains unknown whether Jaylen Hurts or Carson Wentz will be Sirianni’s starting quarterback. The Eagles reportedly worked hard to trade Wentz, but received no offers as desired.
