More than two years after Cubs coach Chili Davis was beaten as a scapegoat, the current Mets coach fired a shot at his one-time employers in Chicago.
Who asked him?
No one. That was the beauty of it.
Because it spoke to sincerity, if not truth.
Asked about the value of coaching again this year after coaching away from home last summer due to COVID-19 concerns, Davis spoke before Wednesday’s game about the value of personal chats and a confidence factor here.
“And I enjoy it because I left a place where there was no confidence factor with me and the hits there,” he added. ‘So it’s a fresh fresh air for me here.
After that, the three-time All-Star talked to 350 professionals and .360 on the base percentage further about the Mets hits.
The Cubs have said that after the 2017 season, they have appointed the three-time World Series champion and a long-time coach to help the approaches of some of the young, talented hit core. They fired him after a season when scrapers like Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo “did not commit” to the message he was hired to deliver.
The team’s then president, Theo Epstein, said ‘the offense broke’ in the second half of the 2018 season, and Davis became the fifth hitting coach to be sacked by Epstein in seven years.
Davis was not without a job for long. And even if anyone thinks about the offensive production of Mets since Davis took over, the ongoing issues of the Cubs bringing the young core to the brink of demolition have at least confirmed him.
Not that he asked for any justification.
‘I know what I know. And I know what I’m bringing is not wrong, ‘Davis said the day he left Chicago after being fired. “I’m not going to blame myself for this. I’m not going to blame anyone. It did not work. ”
And since he raised it on Wednesday, this is what he still said on that October day in 2018:
“Regardless of who is [the hitting coach]”Some players there will have to make adjustments because the game has changed,” he said, “and the pitchers put them on differently. They no longer throw corners and fly balls and all that. ”
Fast forward back to Wednesday. Since Davis raised the issue, he has again been asked to succeed the Cubs.
“I want to beat them, probably just as much as any other team,” he said.
And about all the problems the Cubs had as a base in ballball during the shortened season of last year and most of the beginning of this year?
“I do not know what the problems are,” he said. “What I saw going on there, I expressed it. And I expressed it to leadership before they fired me. But that’s in the past.
‘There are some good guys. I wish them no illness. And they lost a lot of players who were there when I was there, “he added, praising Albert Almora, who is now with the Mets.
“They are currently in a renovation phase, but I’m sure they’re still trying to win. And they still have a good ball club. … You can not underestimate them. And whatever problem is going on internally with them, that’s not my problem. That’s not my business. ”
