UK hi-fi brand Cambridge Audio has unveiled its latest pair of true wireless earbuds, which could present a compelling challenge for the upcoming AirPods 3. The Melomania 1 Plus costs $ 139, offering the cheapest AirPods model while more advanced features promised.
Most important of all is that the Melomania 1 Plus, unlike the original Melomania 1 buttons, is compatible with Cambridge Audio’s mobile companion app. In addition to the custom EQ customization, the Melomania 1 Plus offers a ‘High Performance Audio Mode’, which applies enhanced amplification of the same type as the company’s CX series hi-fi amplifiers.
It can unlock superior sound quality when playing high-resolution soundtracks, and it’s one of the various features that can give the Melomania 1 Plus an edge over the AirPods and the rest of the best wireless earbuds on the market.
Battery life is relatively high for a true wireless pairing: Cambridge Audio claims the Melomania 1 Plus is good for 9 hours per charge, with up to 45 available in the boot. This is almost twice the AirPods’ lifespan, at both points.
The Melomania 1 Plus also supports the high quality Bluetooth aptX codec, in addition to the standard SBC and AAC codecs. It is also compatible with both Google Assistant and Siri.
There is no active noise suppression (ANC), but it is scarce at this price, and a relatively generous ten sets of replaceable tips come in the box. This is to help you get a secure fit and maintain passive sound insulation.
Like the Melomania 1, the Melomania 1 Plus also has IPX5-certified water resistance. It is therefore better protected from water intrusion than both the standard AirPods, which do not have an IP rating, and the IPX4-rated AirPods Pro.
Of course, Apple has a new model on the way, the often leaked AirPods 3, and they could already be unveiled at a rumored Apple event on March 23rd. But it is always good to see high competition, especially during a relatively affordable price point.
