The tsar of Ford’s electric vehicles took a thin veil to Tesla in an interview published Friday, citing a number of issues owners have reported in recent years.

Darren Palmer, who has been assisting the carmaker’s electric overhaul efforts since 2017, spoke to Autoblog about the new Mustang Mach-E. It is the carmaker’s first battery – powered car, and is entering an increasingly busy field that is overwhelmingly dominated by one name: Tesla.

“We want to adopt the early majority,” Palmer told the website. Although a large number of competitors are flooding the market, EV acceptance is still relatively low, and gas-powered cars still dominate roads, especially in the US. According to IEA estimates, electric cars accounted for less than 3% of all sales worldwide in 2019, even though its adoption rate is increasing.

Palmer vaguely addresses the elephant in the room and views Ford’s century of manufacturing experience.

“The doors fit properly, the plastic and other materials fit together, the bumpers do not fall off, the roof does not loosen when you wash them, and the door handles do not get stuck in cold weather,” he said. , presumably referring to Tesla’s well-documented quality issues of recent years. In two cases, owners of Model Y vehicles said their cars’ roofs blew away from the cars.

And in November, Tesla recalled nearly 10,000 Model X vehicles over a roof decoration problem. The company did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

“When people see the true benefits of electric vehicles, it drives the will and desire,” Palmer said.
