Ford recalls first Mustang Mach-E SUVs due to loose bolts

Ford is recalling dozens of the first Mustang Mach-E deliveries after discovering loose bolts during the quality checks that the shipment holds.

‘[S]vehicles can have chassis bolts that the supplier does not tighten to specifications, ”Ford wrote on Friday afternoon. “Although the problem in the vehicles involved is not up to Ford’s standards, the company is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.”

Ford says 1,258 Mustang Mach-Es are affected in the US, as well as 90 in Canada, but that the vast majority of them have not yet been shipped to customers. “Less than 75 customers who have already received delivery”, according to the company, must bring in their Mustang Mach-E to be repaired. Ford says it will contact these owners from March 22.

The recall is low by most standards, and so far it does not look nearly as serious as, for example, Hyundai Kona EVs catching fire. But that’s another small hiccup in the launch of Ford’s first mass market EV. The company has so far delivered about 4,000 Mustang Mach-E SUVs, but this week delayed the release of about 4,500 to do extra quality checks and compensate some owners as a result. It is unclear whether the checks were prompted by the bolt problem or another suspicion.
