Ford casts Tesla shadow over quality, calling its electric vehicles a ‘compromise’

The head of Ford’s electrification effort has cast serious shadow over Tesla over quality issues and promises you’ll not have to compromise on Ford’s electric vehicles.

Darren Palmer, one of the original members of Ford’s Edison team who was tasked with designing the brand’s first all-electric vehicle and now head of the development of Ford and Lincoln’s battery electric vehicle, made interesting comments. had in a new interview.

In an interview with Autoblog at the end of the launch of the Mustang Mach-E, Palmer said that buyers of electric vehicles had to compromise until now and accept some “mistakes”.

He said:

“The doors fit properly, the plastic and other materials match, the buffers do not fall off, the roof does not come off when you wash them, and the door handles do not get stuck in cold weather. … ”

Although the executive did not name Tesla by name, several of these quality issues were often associated with the brand.

He says buyers do not have to make these ‘compromises’ with Ford’s electric vehicles.

Electrek’s Take

It would be easy to just respond with a “yes but” and name all the things that Tesla does better than Ford when it comes to electric vehicles, because there are many.

Tesla vehicles have a longer range, can charge faster and are more efficient than Ford’s new Mustang Mach-E.

But Palmer has a point here, too. If we can know that he is talking about Tesla, without first mentioning it by name and just mentioning a bunch of quality issues that we associate with the brand, it tells us that Tesla has some quality issues.

The rapid pace of Tesla has resulted in some quality issues, and especially in the beginning of new vehicle vehicles, such as with the Model Y in 2020, and during the end of the Tesla quarter, the automaker tried to make many cars in many short periods.

The carmaker should definitely work on it, but at the same time it is a fast pace that promotes innovation and leads to Tesla achieving the leading specifications with its EVs, especially in terms of efficiency and range.

Some people will always prefer it, while others prefer to go with Ford and possibly avoid the quality issues.

I think both companies need to look at each other to improve here, and I’m excited about the potential of the new EV competition to increase the overall quality of new electric vehicles.
