Florida reports first case of new, contagious coronavirus strain

Health officials in Florida announced Thursday that they have detected the new, more contagious strain of the coronavirus, making it the third U.S. state to report an example of the virus variant.

The new strain was first found in the United Kingdom.

‘Florida has evidence of the first identified case of the British COVID-19 variant in Martin County. The individual is a man in his twenties with no travel history. The department is working with the CDC on this investigation. We urge everyone to continue to mitigate COVID-19, ‘the Florida Department of Health said on Twitter on Thursday.

Colorado and California both detected cases of tension this week.

The new strain, named B.1.1.7, was first detected in Colorado on Tuesday and found in a man in his twenties who had not traveled.

On Wednesday, a California health official announced that the patient infected with the new strain was a 30-year-old man, and according to Politico had no travel history.

The Florida Department of Health added: “At present, experts expect little or no impact on the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine.”

Health experts and pharmaceutical companies have stated that the current vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are thought to be effective against the new strain, although more research is being done to confirm its effectiveness.

Although more contagious, it can no longer cause severe symptoms or be more fatal.
