Florida nurse paralyzed from neck to COVID-19 related disease – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

LARGO, Florida (WSVN) – A Florida nurse has been paralyzed from the neck down after contracting a deadly disease shortly after hitting COVID-19.

According to Fox 13, 23-year-old Desmon Silva recovered with his mother by his side in a Massachusetts hospital.

In July, Silva went out to dinner with his girlfriend when he started getting neck pain. Minutes later, he lost feeling in his hands and was rushed to the hospital.

When he arrives at the hospital, he does not respond, he is placed in a ventilator and he is admitted to the intensive care unit.

Doctors eventually determined that Silva was paralyzed from the neck down.

Silva’s mother, Barbara Bonnett, told Fox 13 that her son tested positive for COVID-19 about two months before he was rushed to the hospital, but his case is soft and he is recovering.

However, the virus weakened his immune system and he developed an infection called Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis or ADEM, a disease that attacks the central nervous system.

Now doctors are studying Silva’s case and trying to find out why he became paralyzed.
