We knew that a mirrorless camera from Nikon would probably come at some point, but tonight the company officially confirmed its development and the planned release for later this year. They also confirmed some details about the upcoming camera and released an image of the body.
The flagship mirrorless camera, which will be known as the Z 9, was officially confirmed by Nikon tonight. The Z 9 has a built-in vertical grip, as seen in the picture above (although the final design of the bowl may change). The body includes a brand new stacked CMOS sensor, a new image processing engine and 8K video recording, along with other advanced video features. The Z 9 calls the company a “significant advancement in technology and performance to provide users with an unprecedented imaging experience and to process diverse workflows.”
While this is all the information we have at the moment, the company has promised to release more information as the release date approaches. I would expect the Z 9 to be tested during the Summer Olympics (along with the Canon R1). Although we do not have that much information yet, it sounds like Nikon is planning to go against Canon and Sony with the Z 9. It looks like this year will be quite exciting!
