Fitbit’s hardware is solid, but software makes the company’s smartwatches and trackers as good. This is one of the things we look forward to most about Google’s acquisition of Fitbit, and if a survey of the company can be believed, a new, cheaper subscriber level could be underway.
The people at Android Central compiled a survey of Fitbit asking users to check out a ‘potential new service offering’. From there, the current free Fitbit range is outlined, providing essential statistics such as step counts, exercise tracking, sleep count and health statistics. Then of course there’s Fitbit Premium, a $ 9.99 / month subscription that offers a lot more data and options to manage your health.
Apparently, Fitbit is preparing to debut a third-level subscriber level, which costs $ 2.99 a month. This is a fraction of the cost of the regular Premium plan, and as such, does not really add a ton of extra data. It simply provides users with additional historical data of the information you can see on the free plan. Fitbit describes the potential new plan as:
View your activity, sleep, stress and health statistics for the last month, year, forever with unlimited historical data.
As it stands now, the free Fitbit plan only provides access to the last 30 days (or just 7 days for some metrics) of your health and fitness data. With this plan, users who only need this information can be a much cheaper way to do it.
Pursuant to the Fitbit acquisition, Google may not use the data of Fitbit users to sell or target ads. So it’s quite possible that Google could turn to accessible subscriptions like these to increase the revenue of longtime and new Fitbit users. In particular, Fitbit has expanded some Premium features to free users just this month.
